It is built for owners of residential HVAC companies, especially those hiring across a state line or opening a second territory. Every entry is a snapshot of what the cited source published on the verification date; it is a research starting point, not legal advice.
Idaho, field by field.
- Contractor licensing authority
- Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL), Idaho Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Board. Idaho Code § 54-5004: "The Idaho heating, ventilation and air conditioning board, referred to as the board, is hereby created" within the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, whose administrator enforces the chapter (IDAPA 24.39.70). Idaho Code § 54-5015 gives the state exclusive jurisdiction — "Only the administrator of the division of occupational and professional licenses of the state of Idaho is authorized" to examine, qualify and certify HVAC contractors, journeymen and apprentices, and "No local jurisdiction shall have the authority to require additional certification or registration" or fees — while preserving stricter local public-safety rules.
- HVAC licence required
- Statewide. Idaho Code § 54-5008 (Certificate a prerequisite): on and after July 1, 2004 it is unlawful for any person, firm, copartnership, association or corporation to engage in the business, trade, practice or work of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in Idaho unless the person, or the responsible person representing the firm, has passed the required examination and been issued a state certificate of competency, which "shall not be transferable". § 54-5003(1) defines HVAC as the work, materials and fixtures used in the design, construction, installation, improvement, extension and alteration of all piping, venting, ductwork, appliances and appurtenances of a heating, ventilation or air conditioning system, and § 54-5003(3) defines the HVAC contractor as "any person who fabricates, installs, maintains, services and repairs warm air heating and water heating systems complete with warm air appliances including, but not limited to, boilers, pool heaters, space heaters" and related equipment. Licence types on the DOPL fee table are Apprentice, Journeyman, Contractor, Specialty Apprentice/Journeyman/Contractor and Limited Heating Specialty Apprentice/Journeyman/Contractor. Exceptions in § 54-5002 cover owners working on their own single or duplex dwellings, certain farm buildings, logging, mining or construction camps, employer premises that regularly employ HVAC journeymen, modular buildings built for installation out of state, 501(c)(3) home-building organizations, and supervised students in a state-recognized high-school program. No dollar threshold is stated.
